A colorful quote on a patterned background reads, "I choose to focus on progress, not perfection, and celebrate my wins, big or small.”

✅ Today’s Checklist:

  • Be pushy…and don’t apologize
  • Create a resume that turns heads (aka lands jobs)
  • TA reader Tanya reminds us to enjoy the journey

🤔 Riddle me this: I’m soft and small, with a tag on my ear. In the ’90s, I caused quite a cheer. I come in many forms, from animals to fantasy, and collectors cherished every part of me. What am I? (Find the answer on the bottom).

The Graceful (and Professional) Pushback

Pushing back on someone’s idea (or their rejection of yours) is basically taunting that thing many of us try to avoid at all costs, especially at work: Conflict.

Standing by your ideas and opinions can feel empowering or disheartening, depending on the parties involved. There’s always a chance your pushback will meet a counter pushback and then another and so on.

The idea of that happening probably makes you feel some…discomfort.

Women in Sales Everywhere (WISE) recently hosted a panel discussion to talk about why pushback can feel so daunting and how to grow more comfortable with it.

Here are the need-to-know takeaways:

  • Start small. If you tend toward the agreeable and non-confrontational, don’t pick the stuffy, formal quarterly meeting to flex your pushback muscles. Instead, simply start paying attention to small moments of disagreement you experience during casual conversations and collaborations. Start politely and constructively vocalizing these small potatoes.
    • Add-on tip: Take an even softer landing into pushback territory by disagreeing only when using text-based communication formats. Take advantage of the extra thinking time this buys you: Review your messages at least once to look for opportunities to soften or clarify your points.
  • Bypass conflict and reach for consensus whenever possible. This means taking a moment to check in on exactly what and who you’re pushing back on. Ask the person to repeat or clarify the point you might want to push back on—and even validate what you heard and understand back to them—to avoid miscommunication masquerading as conflict.
  • Remember that everyone typically has the same goal: To find common ground. Breathe deeply and take pauses throughout the exchange. In your internal dialogue ask, “Where do we agree?” instead of becoming fixated on where you disagree.
  • Never make it personal. You may be the person someone is disagreeing with, but their disagreement and vocalization of it has nothing to do with you. The same goes when you’re the one pushing back. Try to avoid thinking in terms of being in conflict with the person and instead remind yourself that you’re simply experiencing a conflict of opinion.

Vimcal EA is the First Calendar Designed for Executive Assistants

Vimcal EA saves C-Suite EAs at Dropbox, Kleiner Parkins, and Zapier over an hour a day. It comes fully-featured with auto-deleting holds, overlapping time zone conversions, separate tabs for each of your executives, large group polls and spreadsheets, and everything else a dedicated tool for EAs should have.

Vimcal’s goal is to take as much of the tedious admin tasks off of EAs’ hands so they can focus their attention on the strategic things.

Finally, a calendar designed for those who actually run the company.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE

Start Spinning Resume Gold

One TA reader needs a shiny new resume: My biggest challenge to finding a new job is my resume. I cannot pay what these sites charge for a resume writer and don’t seem to possess the skills to write my own to get me noticed.

You might think—given all our modern technology—that the good old resume would be phased out of the modern job application process.

But alas, the resume, that one-page document that’s supposed to convey all your awesomeness to potential employers persists. Love it or hate it, the resume is one single consistent thing practically every job application requires.
