“To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” — Buddha

FOR THE MIND

Staying focused can be a real b-word

Are you finding it increasingly difficult to focus during work hours?

Maybe your mind keeps wandering off to your favorite TV show or your cat just rolled over prompting a necessary belly rub.

Or perhaps you can’t help but check your phone every few minutes just to see if you have any new notifications.

Whatever the cause, distractions can seriously impact your productivity and leave you feeling frustrated and unproductive.

When you find yourself being distracted or losing focus, here are some mental exercises that you can do to get back on track:

😮‍💨 Take deep breaths – Focusing on your breath and taking a few long, slow breaths can help you clear your head and reset your focus.

🚫 Stop multitasking – Multitasking can be one of the biggest distractions when it comes to productivity. Instead of trying to do several things at once, focus on one task at a time and give it undivided attention until complete.

✍️ Write out what’s distracting you – Sometimes writing it out can help refocus your energy. Putting your thoughts down on paper helps clarify the situation and enables you to move past it.

🤩 Visualize success and stay positive – Visualizing success can help motivate you to continue moving forward towards achieving those goals. Staying positive about the task at hand also helps redirect any negative energy that could be preventing you from keeping focused.

Inner thigh squeezes – Position yourself in an upright position with feet slightly wider than hip-width apart. Squeeze your inner thighs together as hard as you can and hold for 5 seconds before releasing. Do 15 reps.

Slowly dip down until your elbows reach at least a 90° angle, then push back up to the starting position, squeezing your triceps at the top of the movement before repeating. Do 15 reps.

Standing yoga twist – Begin standing next to your chair and place one hand on the chair back for support. FOR THE WORKPLACE

I’m Walkin’ Here

Today is National Walking Day — the perfect time to encourage yourself and your team to move more.

Here’s a fun challenge you can do at work:

  1. Find a comfortable starting point for each team member, such as 10,000 steps per day, and set a team goal.
  2. Set up a step tracker (such as a Fitbit or MapMyRun).
  3. Agree on an end date, such as one week from today.
  4. Track daily steps in a spreadsheet; at the start of each day, have teammates report their total steps from the previous day.
  5. Celebrate at the end of the week with a healthy team lunch or treat.

FOR YOUR TEAM
