FOR THE MIND

📣 Give Me An “A”

It’s National Stress Awareness Month! What better time for a crash course in the 4 A’s of stress management.

No, we’re not talking about an alphabet game — we’re talking about a powerful framework for tackling stress and coming out on top.

Avoidance: As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure. One of the most effective ways to manage stress is to avoid it in the first place. This means identifying potential stressors and taking steps to eliminate or minimize them.

Alteration: Sometimes, avoiding stress isn’t an option. In these cases, alteration can be your secret weapon. This means changing the situation to make it less stressful. Maybe that means delegating tasks to your team members or breaking a large project into smaller, more manageable pieces. Whatever it takes to make your workload feel less overwhelming.

Acceptance: Let’s face it — some things are just out of our control. This is where acceptance comes in. Rather than stressing out about things we can’t change, we can choose to accept them and focus on what we can control. That may mean taking a deep breath and letting go of that project that’s not going quite as planned. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply accept the situation and move on.

Adaptation: Finally, adaptation is all about changing the way we think about stress. Instead of seeing it as a negative force to be avoided at all costs, we can choose to view it as an opportunity for growth and development. For instance, embracing new challenges or finding creative solutions to problems.

FOR THE BODY

💦 Are you part of the majority?

Did you know that up to 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated? That’s a lot of parched people! So we’ve put together some refreshing tips to help you improve your hydration habits and keep your body feeling top-notch.

Step Up Your Water Game

Let’s start with the basics. The most obvious way to stay hydrated is to drink more water. But if you’re like most people, you probably forget to chug down that H2O during the day. So, set reminders on your phone, keep a water bottle on your desk or try using a water tracking app like Hydro Coach or WaterMinder to keep yourself accountable. Try adding some fruits or herbs to your water can make it taste more exciting.

Eat Your Water

Who says water has to come from a glass? You can also hydrate by eating foods that are high in water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and strawberries. In fact, 20% of our daily water intake comes from food sources, so load up on those juicy fruits and veggies.

Avoid Dehydrating Drinks

Some drinks can actually dehydrate you, making it harder for your body to absorb water. So, try to limit your intake of caffeinated beverages, sugary sodas, and alcohol. If you do indulge in a beverage that’s not water, make sure to drink extra water to counteract the dehydrating effects.

The bottom line: Staying hydrated has numerous health benefits, including better digestion, clearer skin, and improved brain function. So, make sure you’re getting your daily dose of H2O and your body will thank you!

FOR THE WORKPLACE

Stress Awareness Month: Tips and Resources for Corporations

It’s that time of the year again — National Stress Awareness Month! As a corporate leader, this is your chance to step up and make a difference in the lives of your employees. But don’t worry, it’s not rocket science. Just a few simple steps can help create a healthier and more productive workplace.

First things first, educate yourself. No, we’re not talking about reading the entire DSM-5. Just do some research on stress and its effects on the workplace. There are plenty of online resources out there that can provide you with valuable information.

Next up, create a “Stress Management Plan. This doesn’t have to be some overly complicated document. Think about things like physical activity, support networks, nutrition habits, sleep patterns, and mental health services. Simple strategies like offering access to employee assistance programs or scheduling regular breaks throughout the day can make a world of difference.

Of course, it’s not just about the boss. Consider sharing relevant tips and insights with your employees on how they can manage their stress at work and beyond. There are countless resources out there on mindfulness meditation, relaxation techniques, lifestyle changes, nutrition habits — the list goes on. And hey, if all else fails, just give them a good old fashioned pep talk.

But wait, there’s more! Encourage open communication among your staff so they feel comfortable discussing difficult issues relating to their mental health. No more sweeping things under the rug; bring mental health out of the shadows and into the light.

Finally, offer some flexibility. We all have different needs when it comes to work, and being able to work flexible hours can be a game-changer for many people. After all, a rested employee is a productive employee.
