How to Gain Visibility Without Seeming Pushy

Gaining visibility in the workplace is essential for career advancement but can be tricky to balance without coming across as overbearing. Here’s how you can tactfully communicate your achievements and align them with your company’s goals.

1. Document Your Achievements

Keep a record of your contributions, focusing on how they align with business objectives. This is the starting point to communicating and knowing the value you bring to your organization.

  • Maintain an Achievement Log: Regularly update a document with all your project results, challenges overcome, and positive feedback received.
  • Review Regularly: Use this log as a reference in performance reviews or discussions with your supervisor to demonstrate your contributions clearly.
  • Example: If you led a project that resulted in a 10% increase in efficiency, document the steps you took and how they translate into time and cost savings for the company.

2. Communicate Strategically

When discussing your projects, frame your contributions in terms of team success and any learnings you discovered in the process.

  • Regular Updates: Share updates about your projects in meetings or through emails, highlighting your specific contributions.
  • Tailored Messaging: When discussing projects, emphasize the collaborative efforts and your unique role in achieving the team’s goals.
  • Example: Instead of saying “I increased sales by 20%,” try “The strategies our team implemented resulted in a 20% increase in sales, contributing to our department’s annual goal.” If you find this falls on deaf ears and still doesn’t get you the credit, you can be bolder and say, “I wanted to test XYZ to see if it would increase sales, and I’m happy to report it successfully increased by 20%.”

3. Engage with Feedback

Actively seeking and constructively responding to feedback demonstrates your commitment to continuous personal and professional development.

  • Feedback Sessions: Regularly ask for feedback from peers and supervisors to understand your strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Implement Changes: Show that you value this feedback by making visible changes in your work or behavior based on the insights received.
  • Example: Ask specific questions such as, “Can you provide feedback on how my management of the X project drove us closer to our quarterly goal?”

4. Volunteer for Key Projects

Choose projects with high visibility that align with company goals. Taking on these projects, especially those involving other departments, increases your exposure and demonstrates your versatility.

  • Seek Opportunities: Actively look for projects that align with company goals and involve multiple teams.
  • Show Initiative: Suggest your participation where you think your skills can add value, showing readiness to handle complex tasks.
  • Example: When discussing your role, emphasize the collaborative aspect, like, “Working on this project allowed me to collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance our workflow significantly.”

5. Share Knowledge

Lead workshops or training sessions that help others perform better. Teaching others not only positions you as an expert but also enhances your visibility among peers and superiors.

  • Organize Sessions: Host workshops or training sessions on topics you are knowledgeable about. Share practical insights that can benefit your coworkers.
  • Document Feedback: Collect and document feedback from these sessions to gauge your impact and refine future presentations.
  • Example: Frame these initiatives as, “I developed this training to help our team refine our approach to X, enhancing our overall productivity.”

5 Life Saving Skills I Learned as a First Responder

When I worked as an Event Manager at Severance Hall, I was required to learn the skills necessary to be a first responder at events.

This meant learning all the walkie talkie codes, receiving first aid and CPR training, and getting a lot of real life practice—I’ve had a patron stroke out on me, another patron experience a miscarriage in the bathroom, and so much more in between.

Here are 5 things I learned that could make a huge difference in these emergency moments:

1. Being prepared to make a 911 call

Everyone knows to call 911 in an emergency, but knowing what questions to expect can help you remain calm and produce the clear and concise info required.

Operators will typically ask for:

  • Nature of the Emergency: What exactly is happening?
  • Location: The exact address, cross streets, landmarks, or other identifying details.
  • Caller’s Information: Your phone number and name, in case of disconnection.
  • Details About the Injured Person: Age, consciousness, breathing status, visible injuries, or symptoms.
  • Scene Safety: Any hazards present, such as fire, chemicals, or weapons, to ensure the safety of responders and others.

2. Signs of a Stroke

Recognizing stroke symptoms quickly is vital. Remember the acronym FAST:

  • Face: Is one side of the face drooping?
  • Arms: Is there weakness or numbness in one arm?
  • Speech: Is speech slurred or difficult to understand?
  • Time: Time to call 911 immediately if you observe any of these signs.

3. Addressing Injuries On-Site

When encountering someone injured:

  • Ensure Safety: Make sure the scene is safe for you and the injured person.
  • Stop the Bleeding: Apply firm pressure to bleeding wounds with a clean cloth.
  • Avoid Moving the Injured: Unless they’re in immediate danger, do not move them as it might worsen injuries.
  • Delegate Tasks: If possible, ask someone else to call 911 while you assist the injured.

4. Basics of CPR

CPR is a critical skill that can save lives during cardiac arrest. Symptoms of cardiac arrest include: sudden collapse, no pulse or breathing, chest pain, sudden dizziness or light headedness.

Here are the CPR basics:

  • Adults: Perform 30 chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Tip: Use the beat of Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees to guide your chest compressions. Watch this 4-minute video for a step-by-step.
  • Children: Use one hand for compressions and be gentler. The ratio of compressions to breaths remains the same. Watch how to do CPR on a child here.
  • Even if untrained, performing hands-only CPR (chest compressions only) can be life-saving.

5. Using an AED Machine

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are machines that can restore a normal heart rhythm in someone experiencing cardiac arrest. They’re available in many public places (usually found attached to a wall) and come with detailed instructions.

Of course, someone who is trained on the machine should take the lead, but if you’re the only person around here’s what to know:

  • Follow the Prompts: The AED will provide clear visual and audio instructions. Follow these prompts carefully, as they will guide you through each step, from placing the pads to delivering a shock if necessary.
  • No Touching: Ensure no one is touching the patient during analysis or shock delivery.
  • Pad Placement: Place the pads on the patient’s bare chest as illustrated on the device. Many AEDs have diagrams or pictures to show proper placement.
  • Shock Delivery: If the AED determines a shock is needed, it will instruct you to deliver one. Ensure everyone is clear of the patient, and then press the shock button. Some AEDs are fully automated and will deliver the shock without manual intervention.
  • Watch this 4-minute video on how to properly use an AED.

I hope you found these tips useful, and while I hope you never have to use them, it’s always better to be prepared for the unexpected.
