5 Ways to Stick to Your Fitness Goals
Staying consistent with your fitness goals can be challenging, but with the right strategies, you can maintain your momentum and enjoy the journey toward better health. Here’s how you can ensure you stay on track:
1. Stick to a Plan
Having a detailed fitness plan is crucial. This should not just be about what exercises you will do, but it should also outline your fitness goals and the steps you need to take to achieve them. A well-structured plan acts as a roadmap, helping you understand where you are heading and what you need to do to get there.
2. Create a Schedule
Consistency is key in any fitness regime, and having a set schedule can significantly enhance this. Plan your workouts like any other important appointment, fitting them into your daily or weekly routine. This regularity helps to form a habit, making it easier to stick to your fitness plan.
3. Find Your Why
Understanding the deeper reasons behind your fitness goals can significantly boost your motivation. Whether it’s improving your health, boosting your energy levels, or enhancing your self-confidence, your “why” can keep you driven on days when motivation is low.
4. Buddy Up
Find a workout partner or join a community. This could be a local gym class, a virtual workout group, or just a friend who shares similar fitness goals. Accountability partners can encourage you, push you to meet your goals, and help keep the journey enjoyable.
5. Be Realistic
Shift your perspective on fitness from being a temporary or vanity goal to a long-term health investment. Recognize that fitness, much like personal hygiene, requires regular and ongoing effort. It’s not a destination but a part of your lifestyle.
Setting realistic expectations for what you can achieve and understanding the necessity of ongoing effort can make a big difference. You wouldn’t expect one shower to keep you clean forever; similarly, one workout won’t make you fit for life. Regular and consistent effort is key.

LEADERSHIP
How to Fire Someone Well
Let’s be honest: there’s no easy way to fire someone. It’s a tough part of business that affects both the employee and the employer deeply. But I do believe there’s a level of respect, empathy, and tact involved in letting someone go. Below are some tips to help you navigate the difficult process:
1. Prior Notification
You can’t (or shouldn’t) fire someone without proper warnings and a performance improvement plan. Ensure they know where they stand, what’s expected, and the timeline for improvement. This transparency ensures that a termination doesn’t come as a shock and respects the process.
2. Empathy
Being let go is tough, even if an employee knows their performance has been lacking. When it’s time to have that tough conversation, bring a ton of empathy. Remember, sympathy and empathy are different—employing empathy helps you deliver the news in a way that’s compassionate and considerate.
3. Clear, Concise Communication
Make sure your language is direct and unambiguous. Clarity is crucial in these moments to avoid any confusion. Stick to the facts, and avoid making it personal. Be honest but respectful, without being overly harsh or apologetic.
4. Privacy and Respect
Do the firing in a private setting. It’s crucial to consider the employee’s feelings and the perception of other staff members. I remember working in an office where a CEO fired someone in a glass-walled conference room. It was humiliating for the employee and extremely uncomfortable for the rest of us. Don’t be that leader.
5. Legal Adherence
Always include HR in the termination process. They can help ensure that all legalities are covered and that the language used does not open the door to legal repercussions. This step is crucial to protect both the employee and the company.
6. Dignity
Let the employee leave in a manner that maintains their dignity. Sometimes, it’s better to stretch the truth a little, like saying “they resigned” or “decided to pursue other opportunities.” This can prevent additional embarrassment and preserves the employee’s dignity in front of their peers. My favorite CEO did this to a fault, and it was the best work culture I’ve ever experienced.
7. Fairness
Offering a severance package can go a long way. This acknowledges their contribution, however it ended, and helps them transition. And, if you made a mistake hiring them, acknowledging that error and compensating them is not only fair but also wise. It also allows for an NDA, which can prevent negative fallout for your company.
8. Managing Emotions
It’s good to be empathetic, but keep overly emotional responses in check. If the employee becomes upset or angry, stay calm and professional. Prepare responses with HR to handle any outbursts or questions professionally.
Firing someone will always be a challenging part of leadership, but by handling it with empathy, respect, and professionalism, you can ensure that it’s done as humanely as possible. This approach not only helps the departing employee but also sets a positive example for your team, showing that even in difficult situations, they can trust you to act with integrity.
