Q: How did you get into your current role/industry?
A: By complete accident. My back ground is in the jewelry and banking industries. I had no experience in the male dominated additive manufacturing industry.
But a year and half ago I moved to Tampa and started looking for EA jobs. I came across this one and everything fell into place. I started as the EA to the CEO and have since transitioned into the Chief of Staff roll.
Q: What’s something you do to help boost your productivity?
A: Delegate. It’s something that isn’t easy for me to do, and I’ve had to learn how to let go of a lot of things and trust other people to get it done. But once I did learn to let go and delegate the smaller (but still important!) stuff, it freed up my time to get a lot of the bigger items checked of my to-do list.
Q: How do you find work-life balance?
A: Setting boundaries and sticking to them.
I take my laptop home each night so I always have access to my email, but I don’t put my work email on my phone. If I did I would constantly be obsessing over it, checking it, and responding to messages at all hours of the night and day.
It’s a little thing, but it makes a big difference.
Q: What’s the best piece of professional advice you’ve received so far?
A: It’s okay to say “no.”
Read it again. Say it out loud. It’s okay to say “no”.
I feel like women especially have a more difficult time with this. It’s okay to say “no” and leave it at that. If there is too much on your plate, it’s okay to say “no” to the colleague who who asked for help with a project or the girlfriend who asks you to go out for happy hour drinks.
Don’t feel the personal obligation to say yes to every little thing everyone asks you.
You’ll bleed yourself dry and the rest of your work will suffer.
Q: What’s your favorite software or app that helps with your workflow?
A: I know it’s not the trendy answer, and while I do use apps like Asana, monday.com, and SharePoint (and love them all) in my heart of hearts I’m an old fashion pen and paper calendar and to-do list girl.
There’s just something incredible satisfying about drawing a line or checking a box next a task you completed.
Q: What’s a book or podcast you’d recommend to a colleague?
A: Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle
Q: What do you like to do in your free time outside of work?
A: I mean you can’t live in Florida and not say go to the beach! Anything to do with playing in the water. I recently took up paddle boarding for the first time and got to spend a day swimming with manatees!
