BODY & BALANCE

Ergonomics 101: Tiny Tweaks, Major Relief

In celebration of National Ergonomic Month, let’s talk about how your body’s positioned throughout your day. Poor ergonomics doesn’t just cause discomfort. Over time, it can lead to chronic pain and reduced productivity. Small tweaks in how you sit, scroll, and move can make a huge difference.

A person sits upright with feet flat on the floor, knees and elbows bent at 90–120 degrees, arms relaxed and parallel to the floor, and eyes level with the top of the monitor. The image includes callouts with posture tips and a reminder to take breaks every 25 minutes.

Whether you WFH or are office-bound, here’s how to set up your desk so your body’s supported:

  • Monitor: Top should be at or just below eye level, 18–24 inches away. A slight tilt back helps reduce glare.
  • Arms & Wrists: Relax shoulders, elbows bent around 90°, wrists straight and level.
  • Chair: Choose one with good back and arm support. Adjust the height so your elbows stay relaxed.
  • Legs & Feet: Thighs parallel to the floor, knees at 90–120°, feet flat. Use a footrest if needed.

🚗 In the Car

Long drives or daily commutes? Make sure your seat supports you:

  • Recline slightly (100–110°)
  • Keep hips and knees level
  • Add a lumbar pillow or rolled towel for lower back support
  • Adjust mirrors to match your posture

👉 Ergonomic driving tips

🛋 On the Couch

Netflix posture matters too.

  • Keep the TV at eye level when seated
  • Place a pillow behind your lower back
  • Avoid slouching or twisting to see the screen

📱Phone in Bed

That late-night scroll? It’s brutal on your neck.

  • Use a phone holder to raise the screen
  • Keep your head aligned — don’t crane your neck
  • Limit screen time before bed if you can

👉 Phone ergonomics from home

💻 Travel Laptop Setup

Laptops aren’t ergonomic by design, but you can fix that:

  • Prop up your screen on a stand or stack of books
  • Use a foldable keyboard and mouse
  • Keep wrists neutral, elbows at 90°

⏰ Stretch Breaks

Even the best setup needs movement. Set a timer every 60–90 minutes to stretch.

  • Focus on neck, shoulders, wrists, and back
  • A few minutes can prevent stiffness and strain

👉 Simple stretches you can print

Don’t try to fix everything in one day. Focus on the areas where you spend the most time (or feel the most pain). A few simple swaps can make a big difference in how you feel every day.

YEAR-END ENERGY

Lock In Before You Clock Out of 2025

It’s October 15th, which means there are exactly 77 days until we celebrate the new year. And if you’re like me, that triggers immediate anxiety and panic.

Omg…What did I even do all year? Did I reach my goals? How did I measure up to that vision board I made? Ugh, whatever, it’s almost the holidays anyway.

But that last thought? That’s exactly the problem.

We’ve been sold this narrative that the holidays mean you have to check out. To stop being productive. Give up on your goals. To use “it’s the season” as an excuse to abandon everything we’ve been working toward.

And honestly? That’s a capitalist trap designed to keep us consuming more, stressing more, and putting ourselves on pause until January.

What if we rejected that completely?

Enter: The Great Lock In

Thanks to Gen Z trends, we have a framework for this: The Great Lock In is a back-to-school framed end-of-year push to refocus, reset, and commit to personal goals before 2026 arrives. The idea is built around Gen Z slang for fully committing or hyperfocusing on a task, goal, or activity. From now until the end of the year, you “lock in” and get your life in order before the new year hits.

I love this concept because it reframes the final quarter. Instead of coasting, you’re building momentum. Instead of starting from zero on January 1st with lofty, unrealistic goals, you’re taking the momentum from 2025 and building onto it.

As kids, Joanna and I used to go to 12-hour lock-ins at the bowling alley. We would just bowl. For hours. By the end of the event, we were 10x better bowlers. To me, that’s what the Great Lock In is.

So ask yourself: what can you lock in on before 2026 that makes you 10 times better?

You Can Have Both: Rest + Progress

Both things can be true: you can keep momentum on your goals AND still be fully present during the holidays. You don’t have to give up on yourself to enjoy the season. Structure and rest can coexist beautifully.

Who decided the holidays meant you should be less productive and incapable? Who told us that taking care of ourselves during this season was somehow incompatible with celebrating?

My Lock-In Plan

I’m not overwhelming myself with massive career goals because I feel steady there. Instead, I’m focusing on personal wellness, which is what actually fuels everything else. When I feel good in my body and mind, everything else follows.

  1. Workout 4x a week and take one long walk a week
  2. Pick one project to launch before December
  3. Eat more protein
  4. Begin my “miracle morning” routine again
  5. Do more drinking-free activities with friends
  6. Dress up more

Here’s why this matters: I could say “create $25K more in revenue” and immediately feel overwhelmed. Instead, I’m framing these as bite-sized but multi-faceted goals that feel achievable. My ADHD brain responds better to that.

If I dress well, I feel good, and I can see myself pitching myself for more speaking engagements. If I have a good morning routine, I’m more productive and can do more in a day. If I eat more protein, my fitness is better, my cortisol levels are better, and my brain function is better. Everything connects.

I’m not tricking myself in a negative way. I’m working with how I operate instead of against it.

Your Turn

The holidays don’t have to mean you put yourself on pause. You can be present, relax, and still show up for yourself. Both things are possible.

So who’s in it with me?! Tell me what you’re locking in on before the new year. I’d love to hear what you’re focusing on and how you’re finishing 2025 strong.
