YOU DO YOU

Mini workouts may save our desk bods

Anyone who logs lots of time at a desk will be tempted to roll their eyes when people say, “Just take a break and workout.”

Don’t they understand that you’re at your desk all day because you’re too busy to step away from it for a workout? Don’t they know how many messages, emails, and calls you’ll miss in even that brief amount of time?

But.

What if a workout only required a few minutes of your precious time?

A growing body of both scientific and anecdotal evidence points to the benefits of the short-and-sweet workout.

An Australian study suggests that one-minute increments of intense exercise has health benefits. Other studies have returned similar results when investigating quick activity bursts of two and four minutes.

Reflecting on switching to short workouts, one fitness enthusiast told Shape magazine: “It’s no longer a battle between me and my schedule, trying to block out a huge chunk of time to make enough minutes in the day for a circuit I wasn’t that into anyway.”

Short workouts throughout the day provide health benefits, they boost your energy, they fit perfectly into your schedule, and best of all, they’re so low maintenance, doing them won’t feel like a daunting task or an interruption.

Short workouts throughout the day could be the ultimate trick for staying healthy when you sit at a desk all day.

Meet and Greet: Marketing Automation Software

Hello, my name is…

Marketing automation software.

I can save you time by managing rote marketing tasks. Don’t let the word “marketing” fool you. I’m not only helpful for selling things. I can help engage your audiences and build brand credibility.

I’ve selected two achievements from my overall resume to highlight for you.

Helping an app (Mindful Mamas) send timely, contextual, and relevant messages.
The specific marketing automation tool: Clevertap

Mindful Mamas’ creators cared deeply about engaging and supporting their users. However, they didn’t have enough staff to have dedicated people sending customized messages of encouragement. Marketing automation software allowed them to accomplish this. With no extra staff, they were able to enhance and personalize their user experience.

Helping a campsite listing hub (Hipcamp) solicit more customer reviews.
The specific marketing automation tool: Hipcamp

Hipcamp’s staff realized that customer reviews are the lifeblood of vacation rental aggregators. Few people will agree to stay on a campsite if they don’t also see that someone before them did so, and also enjoyed their experience. They leveraged marketing automation software to send messages to campsite renters, asking them to leave reviews. The software can manage sends based on reservation time frames, something that would take human staff tons of time to achieve.

Michael Jordan = Your Confidence Coach

In the midst of a confidence crisis, it may not occur to you to turn to the sage guidance of a basketball superstar.

It should.

Michael Jordan is as good at confidence as he is at basketball. (Correlation? Possibly.)

MJ’s quote: “Why would I think about missing a shot I haven’t taken yet?”
Subtext: Why worry about something before it happens? If necessary, you’ll have plenty of time to do that after it happens.

MJ’s quote: “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.”
Subtext: We may not be able to alter reality with our minds, but our minds can influence our reality. If you’re always expecting the worst, reality might just skew that way.

MJ’s quote: “Never say never, because limits, like fear, are often just an illusion.”
Subtext: You don’t really know what’s possible until you try it.

MJ’s quote: “If it turns out that my best wasn’t good enough, at least I won’t look back and say I was afraid to try.”
Subtext: Focus on what’s in your control. You can’t control consequences, so don’t let them interfere with your performance or stop you from performing in the first place.

Conversation Starters for Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month. Here are some fun facts and prompts to get fun conversations flowing:When I say “women’s history,” who’s the first person that pops into your mind?

Did you know that a woman ran for president in 1964?

What do you think it will take for a woman to be elected president of the United States?

What is a glass ceiling anyway?

  • Background details: The term “glass ceiling” is used to concisely describe the invisible obstacles women and other minorities encounter on their way to success. The term entered our lexicon about 40 years ago.

What year/event would you put at the start of a timeline of women’s empowerment?

The first women’s rights convention took place in 1848. It took over 50 years to win the vote. Can you imagine working toward a cause for that long and not giving up?
