The Marriage Meetings That Keep Us Sane

My husband and I both work from home, and we have two pre-teens. On paper, it sounds like we should have all this built in time together. But being in the same house all day is not the same as actually connecting.

We are both working, fully locked into our jobs, bouncing between calls, emails, messages, and deadlines. Then the workday ends and the second shift begins with kids, dinner, homework, and all the little things that keep a household moving. By the time we finally sit down, we are tired, distracted, and honestly not always at our best.

For a while, our important conversations kept happening at the worst possible times. One of us would want to talk through stress, feelings, or some big decision right when the other person had absolutely no energy left. It was not that either of us did not care. It was that one person was ready to connect and the other was already mentally checked out.

So we started doing something that felt slightly ridiculous at first. We put marriage meetings on the calendar. Twice a week.

One meeting is for connection. That is where we check in on how we are actually doing. We talk about pressure, anxiety, happiness, things that are feeling heavy, and anything that has gone unsaid. It gives us a dedicated space to make eye contact, listen, and be fully present with each other instead of trying to squeeze emotional connection into a random exhausted moment.

The second meeting is financial. We go over expenses, upcoming plans, anything money related, and whatever decisions need to be made. It keeps those conversations from creeping into every other part of our week.

Seriously, it has helped more than I expected. We communicate better. We interrupt each other less. Little frustrations do not pile up the same way because there is already space to talk. Even our money conversations feel less loaded because they are not catching either of us off guard.

What I love most about these meetings is not that they are groundbreaking. It is that they are intentional. They create space for conversations that used to happen badly or not at all.

It is not glamorous. It is not spontaneous. It does not sound particularly sexy to say, “Let’s discuss our feelings and the budget.” But it works.

In this season of life, when everything can start to feel rushed and transactional, these little meetings help us stay connected on purpose, and that feels romantic in its own way.
