The Stripe’s personal and reflective post about making an enemy out of envy inspired us to tackle the topic. Envy might appear small and superficial, but it can be more dangerous than you think. Here are some tips for taming it.
Envy vs jealousy
These feelings are similar, but not precisely the same.
Unlike jealousy (also not fun, of course), envy includes the desire to actually have what someone else has. This desire is what makes it consuming and destructive. It can blind you to your own true values and interests, making you yearn for something because someone else has it—not because it’s actually important to you. As The Stripe says, “I think envy goes away when you get really clear on who you are and what you want.”
