I’ve been working with my therapist, Andrea, this year on a concept that sounds simple but is low-key hard for me: not achieving.
I’m not talking “resting so I can be more productive later.” Not “recharging.” Just… not achieving. On purpose. When she first said it I kind of laughed it off; like, okay sure, I’ll just stop doing the thing my entire personality is built on, no big deal. But she was serious.
My family is Filipino and Chinese, so yes, I had a tiger mom. Achievement wasn’t just encouraged in our house, it was the love language. Good grades got me attention. Awards got me praise. Feelings? We didn’t do those. Being sad wasn’t seen as an option. You pushed through, you performed, you produced.
That wiring worked for a long time. It got me through school, my career, even building this newsletter. But my therapist helped me see something I couldn’t unsee: when your self-worth is wired to your output, rest doesn’t feel like rest; it feels a lot like failure.
There’s a name for it in psychology: contingent self-worth. Your value depends on meeting conditions, and for high achievers the condition is always performance. You’re worthy when you’re producing. You’re lovable when you’re useful. And it doesn’t clock out when you do. It’s why you feel guilty watching TV at 2 PM. It’s why “self-care” becomes another optimized routine.
Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, who wrote Sacred Rest, calls it a permission problem. High achievers don’t struggle with how to rest. They struggle with believing they’re allowed to.
Sound familiar? It must, because when we surveyed you recently, 36.5% said work-life balance is the #1 thing driving you right now. And when we asked about your biggest challenges, the answers sounded like they came from the same person:
“I feel like I can handle it so I should do it.”
“I catch myself taking on more than what’s asked of me, just to prove my worth, instead of trusting that the work I’m already doing is enough.”
“Struggling with hyperproductivity; feeling ties between my self-worth and the amount of to-do list items I check off :(.”
That last one really nails it. That wiring seeps into everything. You burn out faster. You resent the people around you. You stop enjoying the things you actually built. I was running a business I loved and couldn’t figure out why I felt empty on a random Tuesday afternoon. My therapist was like, yeah. That’s what happens when your only source of feeling okay is output, and the output never feels like enough.
I don’t have a neat ending for this. I’m still in it. But I wanted to write it because I think a lot of us are walking around with this same operating system and we never really named it. Now it has a name. And just knowing that has changed how I talk to myself when I catch the guilt creeping in.
