1. When you’ve already been shown how to handle a task or project. Whenever you’re tasked with something new it can be tempting to rely too heavily on the person who passed the project or task to you. To mitigate this, create a standard operating procedure for yourself, or reference other resources already provided.
2. When you know the next step. Oftentimes you know the next step but are so overwhelmed by the entire process that you end up turning to others for solutions. Instead, I would encourage you to take the actions you know to take and check in with your executive or other stakeholders regarding possible solutions for those pieces of the puzzle you’re unsure about.

1. When you’re experiencing burnout. Burnout feels a lot like stumbling without being able to catch your footing. While in a state of burnout, things are more likely to fall through the cracks, and mistakes are frequently made. Taking a step back – in order to take care of yourself and regain your balance – will require the help and support of others.
2. When you genuinely don’t have any idea of the next step. If you honestly don’t know what to do next, ask for help. Simple enough.
3. When asking a simple question will give you back substantial amounts of productive time. There were times in my career when I spent way too much time hunting down an answer that it would have taken my executive 2 seconds to give me. We all walk a fine line between self-sufficiency and wasting valuable time that could be better spent. If asking the question will give you back hours of productive time, just ask it.

1. Open a Google doc or grab a slip of paper. Write down all the thoughts you have about asking for help. Get all of the judgments and fears out of your head. Self-awareness is the first step in overcoming your hangups.
2. Orient yourself around a solution. Ultimately, whatever situation you find yourself in really isn’t about you. Stay solution-oriented. Being solution-oriented will serve you in being resourceful -or- asking for help. Don’t just come with questions, present a few different potential options for a solution.
