After my own experience with burnout, and after coaching several assistants during and after burnout, I’ve noticed an understandable yet disturbing trend. Most of us tend to experience “burnout whiplash”.
Burnout whiplash is the name I’ve given our unconscious response to circumstances after surviving burnout. It can look like:
For a couple of years after my stroke, the ground I walked on was unsteady. Once sure of my ability to control everything (my marriage, my job, friends, etc), I began to realize I had absolutely no control (lost my marriage, lost my job, had almost no friends). This caused me to become overly reactive to everything in my life.
Here’s the truth. Whether I realized it at the time or not, I did have control over what mattered most. I had control over my thoughts, feelings, and actions, which directly affected my results.
When you realize where your power lies, you no longer have to shrink back from your circumstances, or live a reactionary life. You can stand in the fullness of who you are.
Depending on what you’re dealing with, you may need to hire a therapist (great for understanding your past & helping you move forward).
For less severe cases, a coach (great for pointing out patterns and thoughts that are holding you back) may be appropriate.
I’ve worked with both at different times in my life, and they’re both fantastic.

Gemini – Do not stay where you are unfulfilled
There’s a lot of ‘newness’ and ‘freshness’ in your energies right now, and this is acting as a reminder that you should not stay where you feel unfulfilled. Stagnancy will not serve you in these new energies you are discovering. It’s all part of the bigger picture, but to thrive in your career this month, you need to be active in removing yourself from situations that do not align with you.
