JOANNA’S JOURNAL
Perfectionism is the enemy of progress
Years ago, I was the front woman of a live electronic/alt-pop band.
We performed at a local fest in front of hundreds of people once, and producer Jim Wirt (Incubus, Fionna Apple, etc.) just happened to be in his studio and heard us from his window.
He said he came running out of his studio to watch us — and then offered to record us.
I had no idea who he was then, but his wife (and business partner) kept reaching out to me. After weeks of pursuing us, we finally took a meeting and agreed to have him produce our next album.
This was the first time I had ever recorded in a legit studio with a producer with street cred — it was one of my favorite experiences of all time.
When we finished the album, we invited some friends to listen to it from start to finish. I still remember sitting on the floor, big black speakers booming, drinking beers, and getting chills from our beautiful hard work transpiring in surround sound.
But we never released the album. To this day, it sits in a Dropbox collecting digital dust.
Why? We got hung up on making the release perfect, and wanted to make it this big deal.
We talked about pushing socials, doing a release party, and we got so hung up on the details and how to make it grand that too much time ended up passing.
One of my bandmates ended up moving away during that time, and I also moved back home to Los Angeles, so the band broke up.
I still think about releasing the album all the time, but it’s a lesson that continues to serve me. Any time I want to try something new and hesitate, whether it be for The Assist or something else, I think back to the moment we let perfection kill our progress.
So, just put it out there! Even if it’s scary, and even if it might suck. The quicker you do something, the quicker you’ll learn and have a chance to do better.
Perfection isn’t real, but being real is way more valuable.

Binge on this
🎥 Movie: Poor Things is now streaming on Hulu. Emma Stone is enchanting in this unique dark comedy reminiscent of a modern day Frankenstein.
📚 Book: The Housemaid is a thriller with several twists to keep you hooked (you may even finish it in one sitting). If you enjoyed Verity, this is sure to scratch your reading itch.
🎙️ Podcast: If you’re a true crime fanatic, you may know about Crime Junkie — but have you checked out the full Audiochuck repertoire? The Deck Investigates and Park Predators are some of our faves.
🎵 Album: While Ariana’s Eternal Sunshine is getting tons of hype, Helado Negro’s Phasor (avant-pop) may have slipped your radar when it was released last month.

JUST FOR FUN
Meet Atticus
Atticus takes napping to Olympic levels — his strategy involves finding the comfiest spot, executing a perfect downward dog stretch, and then letting out a contented snore that could rival a chainsaw.
He’s not just a napper; he’s a gold medalist in the sport of synchronized snoozing, and his dreamland adventures make me wonder if he’s chasing mailmen or herding sheep in his canine dreams.
