ASK YOURSELF THIS

What if it were easy?

What if it were easy?

The favorite past time of a perfectionist is to make something way harder than it is.

And when my perfectionist part makes something feel too hard, I have a tendency to freeze.

It makes it impossible to even get started.

A phrase I’ve started asking myself: what if it were easy?

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to have a more in-depth conversation with that perfectionist part and get out of freeze or procrastination around a task.

  1. What support do I need? Support could look like asking for help from a friend or colleague, it could look like a virtual co-work session for accountability, a snack, a delicious beverage, a meditation session, or a time constraint.
  2. How can I make it easier? This question is simple, and I find the answer is too. Sometimes I need different music, a fresh glass of water, or to be more comfortable. Sometimes, I need to just start by working on the thing for 5 minutes than taking a break.
  3. What if I fail? What if I succeed? We have a tendency to focus on the worst case scenario. We worry and fear the potential failure. Work through that and lay out what would happen if you fail. And, what would be your response to that outcome? Then, challenge yourself to examine what would happen if you succeed. We often forget to look at that potential eventuality.
  4. What would it look like to just start? My go to tool for “just starting” is a Pomodoro timer. I can do almost anything for 25 minutes. And, once I’ve started on a project, I often find it’s a lot easier than I was making it out to be.
  5. What emotion do I want to feel around this topic? Naming the emotion you’re feeling can help to process what’s holding you back. In addition to naming the emotion you’re feeling, try to locate it in your body. This awareness can help you to feel more embodied and regulated.

PET OF THE WEEK

Pet of the week: Freya

Meet Freya

While Freya thoroughly enjoys cuddles on the couch, she is also a very energetic and athletic pup.

She never turns down a treat, even a good “ice cookie” (ice cube).

She is fierce intimidating, and beautifully graceful. But will also show you her silly playful side.

She will bring you a single sock when she is under stimulated.

This is her “Dobby” act. Her owner can’t imagine life without this sweet girl.

💌 We love pets and would love to see yours! Fill out this form if you’d like us to feature your fur baby in a future issue.
