What exactly is burnout?
While many of us intuitively know when we are nearing burnout, I thought it would be helpful to pinpoint what burnout stems from to help you avoid it.
Burnout starts psychologically.
Whenever you feel pushed around by your circumstances, and lose a sense of control over your life, you feel stress. When you experience long periods of stress that’s when burnout begins to take root.
Also, lack of healthy boundaries is a huge contributing factor to burnout. You know how you feel that tinge of resentment when your exec pings you after hours for a non-emergent item and you feel you “have to” interrupt your personal time to take care of it? Lack of boundaries only causes you to feel pushed around by your circumstances even more.
Burnout can have physical ramifications.
Burnout is prolonged stress. Prolonged stress will inevitably manifest itself physically. When I suffered burnout it manifested as a stroke.
I would argue, even worse than a dramatic health episode, smaller health issues can end up being more detrimental because they’re not large enough to demand your full attention.
How do I move past burnout?
Hit the pause button. Take an accounting of your life. Are you regularly doing things that fill you up and bring you joy? Where can you be better at setting and holding boundaries? Do you spend a lot of time and energy people pleasing only to end up feeling miserable yourself?
In what ways can you take your power back and set yourself up for long term success?
Answering these questions is a great place to start.
