STRESS

The Power of Habit: How Harnessing Routine Can Reduce Stress
We like to think we’re in control of our daily decisions, but research suggests otherwise—about 40-45% of what we do each day is purely habitual. That means nearly half of our lives run on autopilot, directed by neural pathways so ingrained that we rarely think twice. But here’s the good news: by understanding how habits work, we can hack our brains to make life easier, reduce stress, and optimize our well-being.
Your Brain Loves Habits—Here’s Why
The brain is constantly looking for ways to save energy. Habits allow it to offload repetitive tasks to the basal ganglia, a deep, primitive part of the brain responsible for automatic behaviors. This frees up the prefrontal cortex, the area in charge of decision-making and problem-solving, to focus on more complex tasks.
Think about how exhausting it is to drive in an unfamiliar city versus cruising down a well-known route. The first requires constant attention—reading signs, watching for turns, navigating traffic—while the second is almost effortless. That’s habit at work. When something becomes habitual, it requires less cognitive effort, which means less stress for your brain.
In The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg describes the habit loop:
- Cue – A trigger that tells your brain to start a routine.
- Routine – The behavior or action itself.
- Reward – A positive outcome that reinforces the habit.
Once a habit loop is formed, your brain doesn’t need to use as much willpower to complete the action—it just does it. That’s why good habits make life smoother, and bad habits are so hard to break.
Habits = Less Stress, More Mental Clarity
When you rely on habits, you eliminate decision fatigue—the mental drain that comes from making too many choices. Studies show that excessive decision-making depletes willpower, making us more likely to procrastinate, snap at loved ones, or make poor choices.
Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and Barack Obama all famously wore the same outfit daily to avoid wasting brainpower on trivial decisions. By removing the small choices, they preserved mental energy for what really mattered.
The same applies to stress management. When self-care, work habits, and healthy routines become automatic, they don’t feel like additional burdens. Instead, they act as stabilizers, helping you navigate high-pressure situations with more ease.
How to Build Stress-Reducing Habits
If you want to create habits that lower stress and improve productivity, here’s where to start:
1. Start With Keystone Habits
Duhigg highlights keystone habits—habits that trigger positive ripple effects in other areas of life. Examples include:
- Exercising regularly → Leads to healthier eating, better sleep, and improved focus.
- Waking up at the same time daily → Regulates your circadian rhythm, improving mood and energy.
- Making your bed → Creates a sense of accomplishment, reinforcing productivity.
Find one keystone habit, and let the benefits compound.
2. Stack Habits for Efficiency
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, recommends habit stacking—linking a new habit to an existing one.
Example: If you want to start meditating, attach it to your morning coffee routine: “After I pour my coffee, I will meditate for one minute.” Over time, the habit becomes automatic, requiring little effort.
3. Eat the Frog First
Productivity expert Brian Tracy coined the term “Eat the Frog“, which means tackling your most difficult or important task first thing in the morning.
Why? Because your prefrontal cortex is most alert in the morning, making it the best time to handle mentally demanding tasks. Plus, by getting the hard stuff out of the way early, you reduce lingering stress throughout the day.
4. Automate and Delegate
Habits work best when they remove mental load, so look for ways to eliminate unnecessary decisions:
- Set up auto-pay for bills.
- Meal prep on Sundays to avoid daily food choices.
- Schedule recurring workouts instead of deciding each day.
By automating tasks, you free up mental bandwidth for more meaningful work.
When we optimize our habits, we optimize our lives. By reducing cognitive overload, we create space for creativity, problem-solving, and joy. Instead of reacting to stress, we can proactively build habits that support mental clarity, productivity, and overall well-being.
The secret to success isn’t willpower—it’s designing your environment and routines so that the right choices happen automatically. When habits work for you, life becomes easier, and stress takes a backseat.
So, what small habit can you implement today that future-you will thank you for?

How The Rich Get Richer (And How You Can Too)
I grew up rich-poor (straddling the line between low-to-middle class). I had private school tuition covered by generous grandparents and godparents, but I also started working at 13 and understood the value of a dollar early on. My financial education was a mix of watching some family members struggle with money while others built long-term wealth through smart investing and financial discipline.
That duality taught me an important lesson: Wealth isn’t just about luck or inheritance—it’s about knowledge and strategy. And while the ultra-wealthy have access to financial advisors and exclusive investment opportunities, there are still ways for you to implement the same principles, brick by brick, to build long-term wealth.
So here’s what the rich know that most people don’t—and how you can start applying these strategies today.
1. Invest in the S&P 500 (Even If You’re Just Starting Out)
What it is: The S&P 500 is an index that tracks 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the U.S. It’s one of the easiest and most effective ways to invest in the stock market without picking individual stocks.
Why it works: Over the last 30 years, the S&P 500 has delivered an average annual return of around 10%. Wealthy investors know that time in the market beats trying to time the market.
How to start:
- Open a brokerage account (I like Vanguard or Stash ) and buy an S&P 500 index fund like VOO (Vanguard) or SPY—even $50 a month adds up over time.
- Set up automatic contributions to consistently invest, even during market downturns.
- Let compound interest do its thing.
2. Build a Real Estate Portfolio Using Equity
What it is: Many wealthy people don’t just buy real estate—they use the equity in their homes to buy more properties.
Why it works: Instead of saving for years to buy another property, homeowners borrow against their existing equity to acquire new assets that generate rental income and appreciation. Equity is the portion of your home that you truly own— your home’s value minus any remaining mortgage balance. It grows as you pay down your mortgage and as your property value appreciates.
How to start:
- If you already own a home, research home equity loans or HELOCs to see if you can leverage your existing property to invest in another.
- Consider house hacking—buying a duplex or triplex, living in one unit, and renting out the others to cover your mortgage.
- Even if you’re a renter, learn about REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) to get exposure to real estate without buying property.
3. Infinite Banking (Using Life Insurance as a Wealth Tool)
What it is: Infinite banking is a wealth strategy using whole life insurance as a personal bank. Instead of just paying for life insurance, you can borrow against the cash value while your money continues to grow. (P.S. After receiving an inheritance from my uncle, I personally invested $15K of it into a custom whole life (CWL) policy and $15k into a variable universal life (VUL) policy. This was after I had $0 debt, consulted with a financial advisor and have plans to build a short-term real estate portfolio one day.)
Why it works:
- Tax-free growth
- Liquidity (you can use your money without selling assets)
- Access to capital at low-interest rates
How to start:
- Look into high-cash-value whole life insurance policies with a financial advisor who specializes in infinite banking.
- Use it strategically for real estate, investments, or even funding your own business.
4. Buy Businesses Instead of Starting Them
What it is: Instead of building from scratch, the wealthy buy existing, profitable businesses that already generate cash flow.
Why it works:
- Lower risk than starting from zero
- Immediate revenue
- The ability to scale and increase profitability
How to start:
- Browse online business marketplaces like Flippa or BizBuySell to see small businesses for sale.
- Start with a small business that matches your skill set and can be improved with better marketing or operations
5. Take Advantage of Opportunity Zones
What it is: The government offers tax incentives to investors who put money into Opportunity Zones, designated underdeveloped areas with growth potential.
Why it works:
- Huge tax breaks if you hold the investment long-term
- Real estate appreciation in high-growth areas
- Government-backed incentives
How to start:
- Research Opportunity Zone funds or real estate in eligible areas.
- Work with a tax advisor to maximize deductions and benefits.
6. Pass Down Wealth Tax-Free with Trusts & LLCs
What it is: The wealthy don’t just make money—they keep it by using tools like charitable remainder trusts, dynasty trusts, and family limited partnerships (FLPs) to avoid massive estate taxes. You know I love estate planning and a good trust.
Why it works:
- Reduces estate taxes
- Protects assets from creditors
- Creates multi-generational wealth
How to start:
- Talk to an estate planning attorney to set up a revocable living trust or listen to this podcast.
- Even if you don’t have a high net worth yet, structuring your finances wisely early on pays off in the long run.
7. Leverage Debt (Instead of Avoiding It)
What it is: Most people think the rich pay for everything in cash. They don’t. Instead, they use low-interest debt to buy appreciating assets (stocks, real estate, businesses) while keeping their cash free for better investments.
Why it works:
- Keeps liquidity for high-return investments
- Inflation makes debt cheaper over time
- Loan interest is tax-deductible
How to start:
- Instead of paying off your mortgage aggressively, consider investing extra cash into higher-yield opportunities.
- Use business loans or 0% interest credit cards to fund side hustles or real estate.
- Borrow against assets (stocks, real estate, life insurance) instead of selling them to avoid capital gains taxes.
You don’t need millions of dollars (yet) to start applying these strategies. Wealth-building is a journey, not a lottery ticket. First, educate yourself. Then, create a plan. Finally, execute—brick by brick.
Even if you start by investing $50 a month in the S&P 500, setting up a Roth IRA, or learning how to leverage debt for good, you’re already ahead of 90% of people.
The difference between those who stay stuck and those who build wealth? They take action. So, what’s the first step you can take today? You got this, mama!
