There’s No Number You’re Supposed to Hit

Maybe sex has turned into another line on the to-do list. Maybe you’re physically present and mentally reviewing tomorrow’s calendar. Neither of those makes you defective.

Somewhere along the way a lot of us picked up the idea that there is a correct amount of wanting sex, and that falling short of it means something is wrong with us. About 38% of U.S. women report struggling with low sexual desire, and more than a third of women in perimenopause or menopause report difficulties across desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain. Some women run high, some run low, some track it to their cycle, some notice it shifts depending on who they are with. All of that is normal.

What’s actually driving it

Stress and mental load. Higher daily stress is linked to lower sexual activity and lower sexual satisfaction. If you’re the one tracking the pediatrician appointments, the field trip forms, and the Q3 forecast, your brain does not have a clean off switch at 9pm.

Fatigue. One extra hour of sleep was associated with a 14% increase in the odds of partnered sexual activity the next day.

Medications. Antidepressants are the known culprit, and birth control, blood pressure meds, and cholesterol drugs can all dampen desire, as can thyroid disease and diabetes. If your libido shifted when you started something new, raise it with your doctor.

The part nobody tells you

Plenty of women assume desire is supposed to arrive on its own, unprompted. For a lot of people it runs the other direction, arriving once arousal has already started. Which makes this a far more solvable problem, because creating the conditions for desire is something you can actually do.

What actually helps

Move your body. Women who exercised frequently had up to an 80% reduction in the odds of low libido. If you are on an antidepressant, exercising shortly before sex has been shown to improve sexual function.

Build a transition. You can’t go from spreadsheet to intimacy in four minutes. Give yourself a buffer: a shower, a walk, twenty minutes where nobody needs anything from you.

Handle the physical stuff. Vaginal dryness affects half of women after menopause and makes sex painful, which tanks desire fast. Reach for lubricants freely instead of pushing through discomfort. A vibrator earns its place here too, and the clinical case is stronger than most people realize. MysteryVibe’s Crescendo 2 is FDA-registered and was designed with urologists and OB/GYNs, which is why doctors recommend it for arousal and natural lubrication. It bends to sit where you actually want it across six motors and sixteen intensity levels, and it is FSA/HSA eligible, which matters if you have funds to spend down this year.

How to bring your partner in

Frame it around what you need. Try: “I want to want this. What I need is more lead time, and for the day to actually be over before we start.”

Perimenopause and menopause change the math

Lower hormone levels are often behind a drop in sex drive, and thinning vaginal tissue makes sex uncomfortable. Blood flow also slows, so you may need more time and more direct stimulation than you used to.

Worth asking a provider about: vaginal estrogen or DHEA cream, menopausal hormone therapy, testosterone (prescribed off-label, with real evidence behind it), and pelvic floor physical therapy.

Some of that will help. It is also true that some women find sex less gratifying after menopause whatever they try, and knowing that going in keeps it from feeling like something you got wrong.

Your libido is yours

There’s no number you’re supposed to hit. If yours works for you, it’s working.

If it is causing you distress or straining your relationship, talk to a provider who takes it seriously. Bring it up the way you would bring up a bad shoulder: a part of your body, worth understanding, and usually fixable.

GUT HEALTH

What If Your 3pm Crash Isn’t a Willpower Problem?

You know the feeling — you’re sharp all morning, then somewhere after lunch your brain just… checks out. Before you blame your calendar (or your coffee), here’s something most people don’t know: that afternoon fog often starts in your gut.

Scientists cracked the gut-GLP-1 connection and turned it into a probiotic called Metabolic Daily—it helps curb cravings and reduce appetite, without changing your diet overnight.

Users report:

  • 91% reported fewer food cravings*
  • 88% saw reduced sugar cravings*
  • 2% felt less fatigue**

29,000+ medical professionals recommend Pendulum’s Metabolic Daily to their patients—that’s saying something.

LABEL CHECK

The Fine Print Between Your Meds and Your Morning Coffee

Your pharmacist mentions grapefruit for about two seconds while ringing up a statin refill, and that detail is gone by the time you hit the parking lot.

What you eat, drink, and take alongside a prescription changes how it works, and almost nobody tells you that. Here are six combinations worth knowing, picked for how often they show up in a real daily routine.

Grapefruit and statins

Grapefruit blocks an enzyme in your gut called CYP3A4, the one that normally breaks down drugs like atorvastatin and simvastatin before they flood your bloodstream.

Skip that step and the medication builds up higher than your prescription intended. One study found grapefruit juice raised blood levels of simvastatin by 260 percent, which is a lot for a fruit that also shows up in half our green smoothie orders.

St. John’s Wort’s two blind spots

The supplement everyone reaches for as a natural mood lift creates two separate problems.

Paired with an SSRI, it can push serotonin high enough to cause serotonin syndrome, a dangerous reaction involving a racing heart and high fever, according to a clinical review of documented cases.

Paired with hormonal birth control, it speeds up how fast your body clears estrogen and progestin, and UK drug safety regulators have recorded unplanned pregnancies traced back to it. Worth mentioning at your next refill if you’re taking both.

NSAIDs and SSRIs

Ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin all raise the risk of stomach bleeding on their own.

Combined with an SSRI like sertraline or escitalopram, that risk climbs as much as sixfold, according to research out of the University of East Anglia.

Acetaminophen doesn’t carry the same risk, so it’s the safer reach for period cramps or a headache if you’re on one of these antidepressants.

Coffee, calcium, and levothyroxine

Coffee and calcium supplements interfere with how much thyroid hormone reaches your bloodstream, and so does iron, with some research showing absorption drop by 20 to 30 percent when calcium is involved.

Most endocrinologists recommend the pill first thing, with water, then a thirty to sixty minute wait before coffee or breakfast.

Skip that window often enough and your labs can look off even though you never missed a dose, which is its own special kind of frustrating.

Bananas, salt substitutes, and blood pressure medication

Spironolactone and ACE inhibitors, both common for acne, PCOS, or hormonal hair loss as well as blood pressure, already push potassium levels up on their own.

Stack a diet heavy in bananas or salt substitutes on top and it can tip someone into hyperkalemia, a spike serious enough to affect heart rhythm. Case reports describe the medication getting blamed and adjusted before anyone noticed the salt substitute sitting on the kitchen counter.

One pairing worth knowing for the opposite reason.

Vitamin C and iron

Iron from spinach and lentils is much harder for your body to absorb than the iron in meat, but vitamin C changes that math by forming a soluble compound with the iron in your gut.

Orange juice alongside a plant-based iron source has been shown to more than double how much of it your body actually takes in, useful math if you’re managing low iron from a heavy cycle or a mostly plant-based plate.

Your pharmacist already has your whole list pulled up, every prescription and supplement. Ask them to run through it next time you’re at the counter. Five minutes, no appointment, no charge.
