FOR THE MIND

The Scoop on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

As the days are shorter and the weather gets colder, it’s easy to feel a little down in the dumps. But for some, it’s more than just the winter blues. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that affects millions of people during the winter months each year.

It can cause increased levels of anxiety, irritability and fatigue, as well as changes in sleeping patterns and appetite. Left untreated, SAD can have a significant impact on your wellbeing both at work and in your personal life.

SAD Symptoms:

  • Low energy levels
  • Lack of motivation
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Irritability or sadness
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • So, what can you do to support your team or other loved ones during these challenging times?

☀️ Encourage them to take breaks and get outside for some fresh air, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Invite them to join you for lunch or coffee, or plan a fun activity together to boost morale.

😔 Be understanding and flexible with deadlines and workloads. Provide resources such as therapy options or tips for managing SAD.

📙 Arm your colleague or loved one with helpful resources and tips to manage SAD symptoms.

🗣️ Implement regular check-ins and share encouraging words to remind them of their strength and resilience.

Remember, taking care of your mental health is just as important as physical health — don’t hesitate to reach out to HR or a mental health professional if you or a loved one needs support.

FOR THE WORKPLACE

Benefit from the Benefits

The times are a-changin’ and so are the benefits employees are seeking. Gone are the days where just a 401k and a dental plan were the crème de la crème.

Now, employees are demanding more comprehensive mental health benefits at work, and for good reason. After all, mental health is just as important as physical health and when left unchecked, can cause an employee to feel down in the dumps, stressed out and less productive. In fact, according to The Global Wellness Institute expects mental health benefits to grow 9.8% annually over the next five years.

But it’s not just employees who stand to benefit from improved mental health support in the workplace. Companies that prioritize the mental well-being of their employees tend to see an increase in productivity, employee engagement and loyalty.

How can you bring these resources to your workplace, you ask?

Here are some suggestions:

Employee Assistance Programs (EAP): EAPs provide employees with confidential counseling services, resources and referrals to mental health professionals. This type of program is effective in addressing employees’ mental health and personal problems which may affect their work.

Mental health days: Encourage employees to take time off if they need it for their mental health and allow them to use the same benefits that they would use for a physical illness.

Mental health education: Offer training and workshops for employees on topics such as stress management, time management and self-care.

Employee wellness programs: Encourage physical activities, such as yoga and meditation, and provide a break-out space or room for relaxation or mindfulness.

Flexibility: Offer flexible work arrangements and options such as working from home, flexible hours, and part-time work to help employees manage their mental health and personal life.

Creating a supportive and open culture: Encourage open conversations around mental health and create a culture that prioritizes mental well-being.

Offer access to therapy and counseling services: Employees can access therapy and counseling services through employee benefit programs, remote counseling and coaching, and employee assistance programs, with different ways and different financial options.
