Today’s checklist: Save these winter woe fixes, start using an attention-to-detail checklist, find out what holiday cards people really want, and celebrate more things this December.


Your biggest winter woes: Fixed.


Cold weather and short winter days can leave you feeling less than 100%. Here are some feel-better tips to get you through the gloomy season.

Winter woe: Being cold, all the time. 

The fix:

If you’re in an office setting, try: Copying Linus from the Peanuts comics. Take your favorite blanket everywhere. Keep it on hand during your commute, while working in the office, when you go into those refrigerator conference rooms, etc. Pendleton, and many other brands, sell warm blankets that roll up to look like cute tote bags.

If you’re in your own space, try: Sealing the perimeter! Walk around, closing all the doors, vents, and window coverings in empty rooms. Look for gaps and cracks between interior and exterior doors and windows and cover them with a draft blocker or a rolled up blanket.


Winter woe: Your skin is impossibly dry. 

The fix:

Stay hydrated by drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day. Yes, keeping your insides hydrated will help keep your outsides hydrated as well.

Tip! Eating a lot of delicious winter soup is also the perfect way to boost your overall hydration levels.

Put hand lotion next to the soap on all your sinks—all of them! This will make it easy to replenish the moisture you just took from your hands by washing them with antibacterial soap, which is also important for warding off all those nasty winter sicknesses.

Keep lotion and lip balm on your workspace (or wherever you spend a majority of time) and in your car. 

Cut back on caffeine, which is a diuretic and causes your body to flush out excess fluids.


Winter woe: Getting sick a lot.

The fix:

Get as much vitamin D as you can by going outside every day, even when it’s cold, and by adding vitamin D supplements to your routine. Vitamin D helps keep your immune system working well, and as an added benefit, it helps fight off winter fatigue.

Eat foods that strengthen your immune system, such as nuts, broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, and berries.

Check your attention to detail


As surgeon Atul Gawande details in his book, The Checklist Manifesto, competence does not guarantee error-free work. That’s why he loves checklists.

We love them because they help you remember everything without actually using brain space. Plus, if you use a checklist consistently over time, you’ll eventually remember everything without looking at it.

Your brain will recall every line item on the checklist together, as one big happy concept. It’s like driving. It involves many little steps, but once you really know what you’re doing, you don’t have to think about all those little steps. You just drive.

Check your attention to detail and also improve it over time with this go-to weekly checklist:

  • I verified the accuracy of the information I received.
  • I double checked my work (including emails).
  • I asked many questions.
  • I gave people the information they needed, when they needed it.
  • I looked for opportunities to improve or correct big-picture processes or strategies.
  • I shared my ideas for improving or correcting big-picture processes or strategies.
  • I went to meetings prepared with ideas and questions.
  • I listened to and reflected on what others said during conversations and meetings.
  • I used facts and evidence to evaluate my decisions and those of others.
  • I understood the purposes and benefits of my work.

Holiday cards: The people have spoken


A recent survey of U.S. consumers commissioned by Shutterfly has clarified what kinds of holiday greetings people really want to get. Here are the juicy details:

Two thirds of all respondents would rather have a physical card than a digital one.

If you think older generations might be skewing those numbers, then think again. The younger ones seem to have the strongest attachment to physical cards:

  • 62% of Millennials want physical cards 
  • 59% of Gen Z’ers want physical cards 

What do people want to see on their cards? 

Over half of the respondents said they want to see personalization—a customized greeting at the very least.

30% want that personalization to be photos of YOU. (There’s still time to organize a photoshoot for this season’s send.)
