BIGGEST CHALLENGE
How to Mention Your (👎) Ex-Job Without Blackballing Yourself
You’re in an interview, and the hiring manager asks you the dreaded question:
“Why did you leave your last job?”
Maybe your previous boss was a micromanaging nightmare, the culture was toxic, or you just couldn’t take one more mandatory “fun” Zoom happy hour. Whatever the reason, you need to be honest without looking and sounding like a walking red flag.
So, how do you talk about a flawed previous employer without torpedoing your chances with the new organization?
1. Keep It Classy (Even If They Don’t Deserve It)
As tempting as it is to launch into a fully transparent rant, don’t. Trash-talking a past job makes you look bitter and the interviewer may assume you’ll do it to them, too. Keep your tone neutral and professional.
🔴 Instead of: “My last boss was a controlling dictator who micromanaged my every move.”
🟢 Try: “I prefer a work environment where I have more autonomy and trust to complete my tasks.”
2. Focus on What You’ve Learned
Even the worst jobs teach you something – if nothing else, they show you what you don’t want. Spin it into a growth moment.
🔴 Instead of: “The leadership was a mess, and communication was nonexistent.”
🟢 Try: “I learned the importance of clear communication and teamwork, which I now prioritize in my work style.”
3. Keep It Short & Move On
The longer you dwell on the bad stuff, the more it looks like you’re not over it. Answer the question, then pivot to why you’re excited about this opportunity.
🔴 Instead of: “That place was a dumpster fire, and I couldn’t wait to leave.”
🟢 Try: “I was looking for a role that better aligns with my career goals, and I’m really excited about this position because…”
4. Show What You Want, Not What You Left
Focus on what you’re running toward versus what you ran away from. Employers love forward-thinking candidates.
🔴 Instead of: “I hated the culture and lack of career growth.”
🟢 Try: “I’m really looking for a company that values professional development, and I love that your team offers mentorship opportunities.”
You don’t need to pretend your previous job was amazing, but you do need to present yourself as a positive, adaptable professional. Stay classy, keep it short, and shift the focus to what excites you about the future.
