FINANCES

What to Do When You’ve Overspent Your Budget

Oops! I did it again. I let my impulsive YOLO spirit hijack my summer finances.

As an entrepreneurial girly, cash flow is a constant chase, and I’m always keeping an eye on my bank account. But after a wild start to the year, I let myself go a little too wild with my spending. Eating out without looking at prices, saying yes to every travel adventure. It all adds up fast.

So if you find yourself way outside of your budget, what do you do next? Here’s how I’m getting back on track:

Face the numbers

First, I had to face the actual numbers. No more avoiding credit card statements or pretending I didn’t see those bank notifications. I logged into every account, totaled what I owed, and compared my monthly expenses to my income. It wasn’t fun, but you can’t fix what you refuse to acknowledge.

Cut back

Next, I started cutting back wherever I could, especially where I was bleeding money without thinking. I’m eating out less and meal prepping more. Those $15 salads and $8 lattes were convenient, but they were also destroying my budget. So, I’m back to grocery shopping and cooking at home (and trying to kick my UberEats habit). Instead of dinner out with friends, I’m going to opt for $0 activities like movie nights or beach walks.

Take advantage of free money

I’m also taking advantage of 0% APR credit card offers to consolidate some debt and give myself breathing room. This isn’t a long-term solution, but it buys me time to pay down balances without drowning in interest charges. The key is having a clear payoff plan before the promo period ends. If you’re considering this route, read the fine print carefully and make sure you can realistically pay off the balance during the 0% period.

Find more income

But the biggest thing I’m doing is making more money. This is where my entrepreneurial brain kicks in. I’m actively reaching out to past clients, pitching new prospects, and saying yes to projects I might have turned down before.

For W-2 workers, this could look like babysitting, online side hustles, selling things on Facebook Marketplace, or refurbishing items and reselling them. There are so many ways to generate extra income if you’re willing to get creative and hustle for a few months.

Be patient & consistent

What I’m not doing is beating myself up endlessly. Yes, I overspent. Yes, I made impulsive choices. But shame doesn’t pay bills. Action and consistency do. I’m also not making drastic moves like draining my emergency fund or skipping necessary expenses. The goal is to course-correct, not create new financial problems. I’ve got a plan, and now it’s all about patience and follow-through.

Getting back on budget after overspending isn’t glamorous. It takes discipline, a few sacrifices, and some honest assessment of your priorities. But it’s temporary. A few months of intentional frugality and extra hustle can reset your finances without derailing your entire life.

If you’re in the same boat, know that you’re not alone. We all have seasons where money gets away from us. What matters most is catching it early and taking real action to turn things around.

PET OF THE WEEK

Meet Lucky Loo

Every kingdom needs a queen, and in this one, her name is Lucky Loo. She’s been running the house since 2020 with a perfect mix of grace and mischief. Her strategy? Outwait the other cats for food, commandeer the weighted blankets, drink exclusively from the sink, and keep her humans on call 24/7. Loud noises? Unacceptable. Automatic litter box? Jury’s still out.

🐾 Got a cute fur baby? Submit them to be our pet of the week in an upcoming issue.
