Creating sustainable boundaries with tech

Some new research shows that digital detoxes don’t actually help us to be happier, and for some can be detrimental to their mental health, cutting them off from community. Here are tips so you can create a healthy, sustainable relationship with your phone.
  1. Use built-in tools: Take 10 minutes today to review your phone’s internal settings for screen time and app use. How can you use what’s already built in to enforce the boundaries you want?
  2. Try One Sec: I have a tendency to accidentally fall into a TikTok hole way too often. One Sec helps me to pause, take a deep breath, and assess if I want a break or if I’m just trying to numb out. It gives me the moment I need to decide to reject my impulse tap on the app.
  3. Create a physical boundary: The best thing you can do for your creative work is to put your phone in another room. Get it out of sight, out of reach, and out of your mind. Research shows that even the physical presence of your phone can be a distraction.
  4. Curate your necessary notifications: Every app wants to send us notification. The more times and the longer they can capture our attention, the more likely they are to make money off of us. But, do you really need those Candy Crush notifications? Fiercely curate your notifications and choose who gets access to your attention.
  5. Be active, not passive: If you do want to use social media, be an active user, not passive. Active users engage with others, ask questions, post, and write comments. Passive use is mindless, mind-numbing scrolling just to get away from whatever else you were doing.

Mini Muffin

Mini Muffin pet of the week

This baby was going to be named Ancho for being so spicy and hissing, but one day after being found she chilled out into a sweet little Muffin! And at 1.8 pounds she’s definitely mini.

She’s a very happy, snuggly baby who is FIERCE when playing with her toys! She’s still learning not to nibble on fingers, but very happy to have a home now with people who will love and spoil her.

💌 We’re huge pet lovers at The Assist and want to feature a pet each week — fill out this form for your fur baby to be featured!
