Don’t Let This Rob You of Your Joy

There was a time in my not-so-distant past when I wore perfectionism as a badge of honor even though it caused me so much anxiety, stress, and worry.

On some level, I knew perfectionism was holding me back, but I still bragged about it as my greatest “weakness” (while thinking it wasn’t really a weakness) in job interviews and would talk about it as “just the way it is” with colleagues and friends.

What I was failing to realize is just how detrimental perfectionism really was to my productivity, goals, and joy.

Perfectionism won’t just hold you back, it will rob you of getting what you truly want in life.

Have you ever set a large goal for yourself only to give up on the first mistake? Instead of recognizing that failure is a part of the journey to success, you throw in the towel because you weren’t perfect.

— OR —

Have you ever found yourself so consumed with worry over whether something at work was “good enough”? You begin to obsess over whether your exec is happy with your performance. Perhaps you’re even losing sleep.

Here are a couple of things that have helped me & several of my clients get off this exhausting merry-go-round:

  1. Recognize that “perfect” is a moving target. What’s perfect for one person won’t be perfect for another. Striving for excellence instead of perfection is a much more effective strategy for producing great work.
  2. Stop talking about yourself as a perfectionist. Let go of this identity. Really! It’s not serving you.
  3. Realize that sometimes “good enough” actually is good enough. Take a deep breath. You don’t have to be perfect.

Simply put, perfectionism is fear of failure.

It’s time we all intentionally decide to stop taking action based on fear and take action from a place of certainty and peace instead.

PETS OF THE WEEK

Elvis

Elvis pet of the week

Elvis was a stray for most of his life until his humans took him in and after two years with them, he has firmly settled in to life as a house cat (AKA King of the castle).

He enjoys waking his humans up in the middle of the night by chewing on plants or whatever plastic he can find. He also likes to leave little puddles of hair ball for them to step on in bare feet.

He looks a bit worse for wear with his missing ear tips and grumpy smile, but he is a very happy boy with the loudest of purrs and is very loved.

💌 We’re huge pet lovers at The Assist and want to feature a pet each week — fill out this form for your fur baby to be featured!
